Cutting Edge Lighting taught by Tri-Coast Photography

Bob, Dawn & I are always looking for ways to better our photography and our creative vision.    With this in mind we  attended a week-long class on Cutting Edge Lighting at the Triangle Institute of Professional Photography here in Pittsburgh.    Class was taught by Mike Fulton, Cody Clinton and Pete Quinn of Tri-Coast Photography.   Saying this was the best class we have ever taken would be an understatement.  I went there with very little knowledge of off-camera flash other than turning it on and upping or downing the power of the flash and returned with a new and better understanding of light and the power it has on a photo.

In addition to having this wonderful opportunity to met and learned from the outstanding team from Tri-Coast Photography.   Our class bonded and new friends were made from as far as Bermuda.  It was mine & Dawn’s first time attending a class at TIPP and truly can’t wait till next year.   Here are a few samples.  I wish I could post more but model releases were not supplied and without them I could not show more than the few noted here.

Okay, truthfully – what do you think of how I am totally rocking my ShootSac … photo  was taken by Peter Quinn from Quinnco Photography, who also shoots with the Tri-Coast Team.   This is an example of Cutting Edge Lighting and is basically straight out of the camera – a little lightning was done.  The shot was taken in the parking lot of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the South Hills of Pittsburgh.  You would never know that this was taken in the middle of  a bright sunny day.  Behind me is the sky and a tree!!

Meet Sean, he is the owner and artist of the Jesters Court Tattoo & More in Southside, Pittsburgh, he was our model for the day.   Sean gave me permission to post a few of my shots so as to show you my attempts at working with lighting and gels.  Again – these were shot in the middle of the afternoon outside.

This was one of my first attempts with using red gels on my flash – as you can see there just wasn’t’ enough power.

With the help from my partner Bob, and two classmates – Bill and Dan.   I was able to get this effect with just tweaking the flash power and placement.

Would you ever think this was outside??   On a side note:  Sean has been a tattoo artist for more than 17 year; he may looking intimidating here but he is a loving father to his beautiful little girl.

Nothing like a class photo:
